Biography

Jacob Gines is an Associate Professor of Architecture at Mississippi State University (MSU) where he teaches advanced design studios and building technology courses – with an emphasis on Materials and Methods. His research and scholarship investigate bio-sustainable materials and their manufacturing + fabrication processes. In 2017, Gines was awarded with the MSU Office of Research and Economic Development Faculty Research Award for his significant research in architectural materials and mass timber design. 

Gines received his Master of Architecture from the University of Utah in 2007. He began teaching undergraduate and graduate design studios at his alma mater the following semester. In 2009, Gines was named the 21st recipient of the Roger Bailey Traveling Fellowship, providing him the opportunity to travel to Northern India and study culture, craft, and meaning in Hindu, Islamic and contemporary architecture. In the fall of 2019, Gines was recognized with the inaugural Young Alumni Award from the University of Utah, College of Architecture and Planning.

Currently, Gines teaches architectural design studios at MSU that examine architectural tectonics for mass timber buildings as well as lecture courses on building materials and high performance wood construction. Gines’ commitment to teaching and training the next generation of mass timber architects is having a meaningful and deep impact on the profession of architecture and the construction industry as a whole.  In the spring of 2018, Gines was the recipient of the Tenure-Track Faculty Teaching Award within the College of Architecture, Art and Design at Mississippi State University.

Gines has been engaged in professional practice since 2001 and is an award-winning designer of several institutional, higher-ed, and multi-family/student housing projects. As Vice President of Research and Design at Method Studio - a 90+ person architecture and design firm located in Salt Lake City, Utah - Gines directs the MAD Lab (Method Architecture and Design Laboratory). By Integrating formalized research activities into the practice, Gines is challenging standard conventions, exploring innovative solutions to complex architectural problems and further establishing Method Studio’s commitment to environmental stewardship, best practices and design excellence.
